Parinirvana (Buddhism)
- Parinibbana (Pali)
- Nirupadhisesanirvana
- Anupadisesanibbana (Pali)
- Nirvana without remainder
- Total extinction
Description
Cravings – klesa – are eradicated, there is dispassion or "fading away" – paravairagya, alobha; even inherent tendencies – skandha – are eradicated. There is no remainder. The aggregates of existence arise no further; those already arisen have disappeared. The cause of action has been put away, results of the fruit of action have been destroyed. This is the state of nirvana without remainder, total extinction. Although parinirvana may occur during life, the term nirupadhisesanirvana, again total extinction, is used to describe that total extinction of the arhat who has died not to be reborn.
