Sho-chu-hen (Zen, Japanese)
Description
The disciple experiences relative reality – hen – in the midst of sho (absolute reality). Although hen, the world of phenomena, predominates, it is nonetheless experienced as a manifestation of the absolute, fundamental, true nature.
Context
One of five degrees of enlightenment – goi – enumerated in Zen buddhism, the depth of enlightenment depending upon the relationship of sho (absolute reality) with hen (relative reality). This is the first degree of enlightenment.
