Self-mortification (Sufism)

  • Mujahada
  • Subjugation of the nafs

Description

This is recommended by the Sufis for the training of the soul. It assists in realization of perfect resignation from the empirical self. The carnal self (nafs) is subdued by living in seclusion, practising abstinence from food and, through stilling of external activity and of internal appetites and emotions, living a life of quietism. Dwelling in a state of purity, he may achieve a higher stage of self-mortification when spiritual perfection is gained through complete surrender to God. Negation of nafs, emptying one's self of self, brings the discovery of the true self.
