Samadhana (Buddhism, Hinduism)

  • Mental abiding in equipoise
  • Mnyam-par-jog-pa (Tibetan)

Description

In Hindu teaching, this is a state of concentration in contemplating the scriptures and the teaching of one's guru. Having reached this stage one is able to instruct others. As described in Gelugpa Tibetan Buddhism, in this stage the meditator is able to remain effortlessly in stabilized meditation. He has overcome the five faults: laziness, forgetting the precepts, laxity and excitement, non-application, and application-effort. The power associated with this stage is natural confidence. A similitude of calm abiding is achieved.

Context

The last of the nine states of mental abiding (navakara chitta sthiti) in Gelugpa Tibetan Buddhism, the second stage of meditation on emptiness, leading to calm abiding, the next stage being special insight. In Hinduism, one of the six great virtues – saktasampatti – as set out by Shankara.
