Nirvikalpa samadhi (Hinduism)

Description

Nirvikalpa samadhi is one of the highest samadhis. It is said to be equivalent to the yogic [asamprajnata samadhi]

. Entering into it, one experiences the heart as being wider than the universe; infinite bliss; and immeasurable power exceeding any occult power. In acquiring nirvikalpa samadhi one generally does not want to enter back into the world. If one remains for 21 days in this state it is likely that one leaves the body. Beyond nirvikalpa samadhi only sahaja samadhi is known.

Another interpretation is that this is the culmination of the fifth stage, a yogic state of formless ecstasy when there is (temporary) absorption in divine reality and a loss of body sense. The individual does return from this state, with an accompanying sense of separate identity and the ego has been suspended but not transcended.
