Mystery

  • Sacred mysteries

Description

Originally, mystery referred to sacred rites which were revealed only to the initiated and thus cultivated an awareness of the numinous. These rites might include the acting out of a mysterious event, such as myths explaining the death and rebirth of crops from winter to summer, the seasons of the year, and so on. In the Christian tradition, spirituality, the living of Christian life with intensity, manifests as an interpersonal relationship with Christ and a sharing in the sacred events or mysteries of his life. Awareness of the mystery in every relationship brings a freedom and commitment that leads to transparency, knowledge of self, manifesting as certitude, peace, joy and immortality, in the midst of negativism, problems, tragedy and contingency.
