Melancholy

  • Melancholia

Description

This state is characterized by gloom, sadness and depression; and by a preference for solitude and study. Although previously distinguished, in that [melancholia]

was said to be a great depression of spirits, with morbid sense perversions, irrational conduct and suicidal tendencies, whereas [melancholy]

was considered less severe with the individual showing same interest in events and ability to continue everyday duties, the two terms are now synonymous in psychiatry.
