Love in God (Islam)

  • Al-mahabba fi 'llah

Description

God is the ultimate but not the only legitimate object of love. Love to God leads to love in God or for the sake of God towards all that God loves, and is demanded if one loves God completely, as is hatred for all God hates. But there must be caution. Because love is blind, it is easy to be deluded into thinking that one is loving for the sake of God when the real purpose is quite different - leadership, wealth or some other worldly advantage. Love then degenerates from love in God to love with God.

Context

One of three types of love of Ibn al-Qayyim - love to God, love in God (for His sake) and love with God.
