Ken-chu-to (Zen, Japanese)

Description

Established between sho and hen, the two polarities of reality, the disciple experiences emptiness and form as totally interpenetrating. The action which arises in this state is in immediate response to circumstance and is without reference to the disciple's mind or heart – kokoro. Such action is without intentionality, is self evident, and is totally suitable.

Context

One of five degrees of enlightenment – goi – enumerated in Zen buddhism, the depth of enlightenment depending upon the relationship of sho (absolute reality) with hen (relative reality). This is the fifth degree of enlightenment.
