- total enlightenment - is not normally achieved in one step but arises after the individual has had several previous experiences of satori of varying length and depth. This less profound experience is referred to as [kensho]
. The Northern School of Zen recognized a distinct process of gradual enlightenment as total enlightenment is approached through a succession of such experiences, the process being referred to as [zengo]
