Joy-land awareness (Buddhism, Tibetan)

  • Sukhavati

Description

This state of awareness is characterized both by compassion, transmuted from passion, and discriminative understanding. It is represented as the pure land or Buddha-field of Amitabha and his boundless light. It is said to be that state attainable at the time of death, when the believer's aggregate of conscious existence is drawn from the heart, in size about that of a small pearl, and dissolved in the heart of the Buddha's bliss and light. From there it will emanate to take birth from a lotus flower in Joy-land. Amitabha's subordinate bodhisattva is said to be the Lord of Compassion, Avalokitesvara.

Context

In Tibetan Sakya Buddhism this is one of the states in the "Ascension Stages Game". In some sets it is numbered 77 on the board.
