Ignorance in dependent origination formula (Buddhism)
- Avijja (Pali)
- Moha
Description
Deluded ignorance (avijja) is the foundation of all life-affirming actions. On ignorance depend the karma-generations (sankhara) of volitional behaviour and thought. In the formula of Dependent Origination (paticcasamuppada), avijja (ignorance) conditions the rebirth-causing volitions (cetana) and their generations or formations (sankhara). Karma generated in a past life conditions the consciousness (citta, vinnana) in the present life. Through consciousness are conditioned the [mental and physical]
(nama-rupa) phenomena of the interdependent groups of conscious existence phenomena (khandas).
