Experiencing the consequences (Buddhism)

  • Shou-pao (Ch'an)

Context

Tsung-mi, a chronicler of Ch'an (Zen), indicated the process whereby, in the unenlightened aspect of alaya-vijnana, intrinsic enlightenment is gradually overlaid by delusion and, in the enlightened aspect, the delusion systematically removed. One experiences the consequences of generating karma at the tenth and last stage in the downward process, corresponding to the last of six coarse phenomenal appearances, that of suffering. In one's dream one experiences the good and bad consequences of the karma generated. This is counteracted by the resolution to obtain enlightenment.
