Dissociation

Description

This expression was used by Jung to indicate a disunion within the self and a breakdown in the potential to embody wholeness, an aspect of neurosis, when there is a discrepancy between conscious attitudes and the trends of the unconscious. Jung further described analysis as a healing of dissociations, although in some psychoses dissociation was to great for this to be achieved.

The term dissociation is also used to describe conscious fragmenting in order for analysis to take place, where an all-embracing approach might, in fact, be preferable.
