Degrees of consciousness (Hinduism)
- Conditions of the self
Description
In the Mandukya Upanishad the soul is said to have four conditions - the waking state or vaisvanara, the dream state or taijasa, deep sleep or prajna and the overarching state which completes the whole, turiya or superconsciousness, transcending both consciousness and unconsciousness. Other sources quote a fifth state beyond these four, turyatita, when the yogin is pervaded by the experience of non-difference between the individual self and the supreme or universal self - and approaches the experience of liberation.
