Deathbed visions

Description

Just as people who have nearly or actually died and have returned to this life report out-of-body and/or joyful or ecstatic experiences of light and peace, with perhaps meetings with deceased loved ones, so those who are about to die and do not return also describe beautiful and peaceful visions. The experience seems independent of race, sex or culture and frequently includes bright light, beings of light, deceased friends or family or even great religious or mythical leaders come to "take them away". There may be gardens or beautiful buildings, vivid colours and sometimes music. The vision does not usually last more than a few minutes and often transforms the dying person who may report great joy and an end to pain. Most people die within a few minutes of the vision, rarely more than one hour later.

Others present may be aware of unexpected light or energy, even a cloud over the dying person which may have the same form as the person dying, connected to her by a "silvery cord". At the moment of death the cord breaks and the shape disperses.

Context

Although some commentators attempt to explain away the experience as hallucinations deriving from drugs, wish fulfilment, oxygen deprivation, etc, it would be unusual for such hallucinations to refer to a time other than the present. It is also noted that the visions most frequently occur to fully conscious and lucid individuals.
