Al-Qayyum (Sufism)
Description
The believer is aware of Allah as the self-existing. All existence depends on Him, as the body depends on the soul, but His existence depends only on Himself. It is divine grace that perpetuates the universe, divine will that provides the cause for satisfying the needs of every atom. With the whole universe in His care, He still cares for each individual as though he were His only creation. Nevertheless we still behave as though we did not need Him, as though we were self-sufficient and existed of ourselves.
Context
A mode of mystical awareness in the Sufi tradition associated with the sixty-third of the ninety-nine names of Allah.
