Abhinvesa (Yoga)

  • Desire for life
  • Will to live

Description

This is the constant and universal desire to live inherent in conscious beings, coming into play at the moment the evolutionary cycle begins on contact of consciousness with matter. It is said by Patanjali to dominate all, even the learned, even those whose life is a misery, and is the last derivative of ignorance, avidya. Called by some the last of the five kleshas or afflictions, it may in this sense be seen as the last of the series which commences in avidya, the root of all the kleshas and of which abhinvesa is the fruit.

Context

One of the five afflictions or causes of misery in yoga.
