Using reflexology

  • Advancing zone therapy

Description

Releasing the flow of energy through the body along its various pathways. When this energy is trapped for some reason, illness can result. When the energy is released, the body can begin to heal itself. A reflexologist views the foot as a microcosm of the entire body and points of access to the life force. Individual reference points or reflex areas on the foot correspond to all major organs, glands, and parts of body. Applying pressure to a specific area of the foot stimulates the movement of energy to the corresponding body part.

Context

This is a 20th century version of an ancient healing and relaxation technique that's probably as old or older than acupuncture. Western reflexology was developed by Dr. William Fitzgerald, an American ear, nose and throat specialist, who talked about reflexology as "zone therapy." But in fact, reflexology is practiced in several cultures, including Egypt, India, Africa, China, and Japan.
