Using protective irrigation

  • Developing protective irrigation systems

Description

Protective irrigation systems are designed to compensate dryland crops for the lack of water betcause of failing rains. In dry years, they 'protect' crops against drought stress, farmers against crop failures and rural inhabitants against famines.

Context

Most irrigation is "productive" rather than "protective". It assumes irrigation water is the essential water supply rather than a stand-by in case of lack of precipitation.
