Using management programmes to reduce emissions of persistent organic pollutants

Implementation

Several activities are underway to help developing countries identify and manage their PCBs so that environmental releases are minimized. UNEP is developing guidance for better identification of equipment containing PCBs and outlining management options. UNEP is also identifying disposal facilities internationally. This work will build on work already done through the Basel Convention on Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal, where countries have already developed guidance, and where there are plans for regional capacity building efforts on waste.

Claim

The international community will need to do more technical work to understand current and trend dispersions of POPs before we really know how extensive the risk management approaches need to be in the long term.
