Teaching disaster resistant construction methods

  • Training constructors to build for natural disasters

Implementation

This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities.

Agenda 21 recommends developing training programmes for contractors and builders on disaster-resistant construction methods. Some programmes should be directed particularly at small enterprises, which build the great majority of housing and other small buildings in the developing countries, as well as at rural populations which build their own houses.
