Strengthening the environmental and operational sustainability of technical cooperation projects

Implementation

This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities. Agenda 21 recommends strengthening the sustainability of projects by including in the original project design consideration of: environmental impact; cost of institution-building, human resource development and technology needs; and financial and organizational requirements for operation and maintenance.
