Sharing water

  • Redistributing water fairly
  • Allocating water equitably

Implementation

The Fair Share Water Strategy is being tested in Africa during the 1996-97 biennium. The overall goal is to ensure reasonable access and a fair share at affordable prices for water for the poor majority of people throughout Africa. Fair share allocations of water are also sought among competing users, for the environment, among riparian countries, for local communities, for smaller projects and developments, for women and children, and for future generations. Fair share water principles and priorities will be applied in key countries and shared water basins, with priority to sub-regions and countries facing existing or imminent water-scarce conditions.
