Researching oral history of the Gypsies

As far as we know, Gypsies never made written records in the history. Their rich heritage of legends, fairy tales, poems and songs, was passed on only orally. Subject to relatively fast alterations, these works were inevitably stripped off all geographic and chronological details, and therefore it has been impossible to locate and trace back their origins, even for Gypsies. Instead, they often contain a general nostalgic attitude of eternal wanderers seeking for their lost homeland.
