Peasant uprisings
Description
Revolting against institutions and symbols of authority and oppression by landless rural labourers.
Claim
In a world in which food is increasingly a political issue, its basic producers can no longer submit to the economic and social degradation to which they are exposed throughout the so-called third world.
Carefully orchestrated peasant uprisings have resulted in massive social change.
Counter-claim
International efforts to improve the socio-economic conditions in rural villages seek to create non-violent solutions which could be far less costly to life and food production than violence.
Peasants have little capacity to contribute to social change beyond the negative aspect of rejecting the old system.
