Increasing number of telephones in rural communities

  • Providing sufficient telephone connections in outlying areas

Context

Three quarters of the world's telephones are installed in just eight industrialised countries, while some 80 percent of the world's people, living mostly in developing regions, have no access to a phone service. China and India are home to a combined population of more than 2 billion people - almost 40 percent of the human race. But fewer than two in 100 people have phone lines. Africa supports 12 percent of the world's people but 1.8 percent of the world's lines.
