Including interests of indigenous people in international agreements

Implementation

This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities.

Agenda 21 recommends that, in the specific case of coastal states, these should ensure that the interests of local communities and indigenous people, in particular their right to subsistence, should be taken into account in the negotiation and implementation of international agreements on the development or conservation of marine living resources.
