Improving seasonal forecasts to strengthen drought prevention
Implementation
This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities. Agenda 21 recommends implementing research on seasonal forecasts to improve contingency planning and relief operations and to allow preventive measures to be taken at the farm level, such as the selection of appropriate varieties and farming practices in times of drought.
