Imposing environmental taxes on aircraft

On 1 December 1999 the European Commission anounced its support for an international approach to the question of taxes on aircraft fuel, which could not be applied solely in Europe. The Commission, for its part, undertakes to look into several alternative forms of environmental tax, with a view to defining a joint approach and identifying the most efficient systems and types of taxation. It will continue its current studies on emission trading and carbon offsets.
