Forming political alliances

  • Political alignment

Description

Social groups, parties or nations joining together to support mutually favourable policies. Sometimes this includes weaker nations supporting the policies of a stronger nation in order to have their military protection.

Claim

Few nations, if any, can isolate themselves. International political alliances of government are a fact of life. The international alliance of organized labour as a political force is considered necessary to deal with employers in the forms of international cartels and multinationals.

Counter-claim

(a) Political alliances focus attention on only a few simple issues (Communism - capitalism, North - South), ignoring the complexity of problems and solutions called for; (b) Alliances set up a situation of conflict rather than reconciliation or dialogue.
