Fatalism
- Belief in fate
Description
Attributing events to some immutable pattern, over which one has no control, and resigning oneself to that state of affairs.
Context
Although conceptions vary greatly among cultures, the terms fate, kismet, karma, nemesis and destiny are often used to refer to this negative means of viewing society and acting in it.
Implementation
Fatalism is most often used as an individual strategy for relating to society, as seen in such notions as "a bullet with (or without) one's name on it" or a people being "fated" or "chosen" to suffer in some way.
Counter-claim
Fatalism saps one's ability to control any events.
