Expanding research capabilities on sustainable management of forests
Implementation
This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities.
Agenda 21 recommends establishing and strengthening capabilities for research related to the different aspects of forests and forest products, for example: sustainable management of forests; biodiversity; effects of air-borne pollutants; traditional uses of forest resources by local populations and indigenous people; improving market returns and other non-market values from the management of forests.
