Developing urban ecovillages

  • Creating urban eco-communities
  • Building ecological neighbourhoods in cities

Implementation

Claim

An urban ecovillage is a human scale neighbourhood where people know their neighbours and care about them. People can live close to where they work and play and have access to other essential services without use of automobiles. Together, neighbours try to minimize waste and pollution of all kinds. Ecovillages work with surrounding neighbourhoods and the city at large to bring a whole systems perspective to urban planning and community development activities.

Reforming cities into ecological settlements is practical. It is inconsistent to develop ecovillages on undeveloped land.

We have the choice of simply allowing cities to expand constantly, or we can look at cities as being a collection of ecovillages. If we choose the second thought, then I believe even cities can be made more sustainable. The suburbs lend themselves exceptionally well to being turned into eco-suburbs.
