Reciting transgressions publically or privately, either ritualistically or spontaneously.

This custom is practised in numerous cultures in many diverse forms, from the positive enumeration of one's faults, as in the People's Republic of China and the Roman Catholic Church, to the ancient Egyptian practice of denying those sins not committed, out of a fixed canon of sins.

Claim

Confession is an emotional cathartic and when done with earnest contrition is a reinforcement to ethical behaviour.

Counter-claim

Confession is an institution invented by cults and ideological movements in order to gain control over an individual.
