Assessing role of women in consumption

  • Giving special attention to the role of women as consumers

Context

The assessment of changes in unsustainable patterns of consumption and production and of values that encourage sustainable consumption patterns and lifestyles requires the combined efforts of governments, consumers and producers. Particular attention should be paid to the significant role which women and households play as consumers and the potential impacts of their combined purchasing power on the economy.

Implementation

This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities.
