An assessment of national population carrying capacity in the context of satisfaction of human needs and sustainable development would give special attention to critical resources, such as water and land, and to environmental factors, such as ecosystem health and biodiversity.

Context

This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities.
