Advocating for posterity

  • Counselling for the future
  • Caretaking the future

Description

Acting in an advocacy role for future generations.

Implementation

The Council for Posterity is an initiative launched in 1991 by the Institute for Social Inventions, London. The 15 Council members are "people who could devote their deepest thoughts to the prospect of the widespread dearth of resources, starvation and the present uncontrollable growth of human numbers and its incompatibility with the hope of future freedom"... and their abilities to "muster all the arguments to call the present generation away from its myopic trends". They comprise nationally-respected elders and two lawyers, the latter representing future generations at planning enquiries into developments with potentially awesome long-term consequences.

Claim

Posterity offers an altruistic aim independent of age, sex, family, creed or nationality; that is, a life with added meaning.
