Adapting

Adaptation is the ability of a system to react to the environment in a way that is favourable to the continued operation of the system. It is as though systems with this property had some prearranged goal and the behaviour of the system is such that it is led to this goal despite unfavourable environmental conditions. Closely related to adaptation is the notion of stability.
