Wernicke's encephalopathy

Nature

This syndrome is characterized by impaired memory, confusion and lack of coordination, caused by deficiencies of vitamin B-1 (thiamine). Because the digestion system of alcoholics is unable to absorb sufficient vitamin B-1, this disorder, and its next stage Korsakoff's syndrome, are also features of alcoholism.
