Traumatic stress is occurs under conditions of infection, injury, burns, surgery and extreme temperatures. Traumatic neurosis is the disruption or breakdown occurs when when sudden stimuli, reminding of the traumatic event, are too powerful to be dealt with or assimilated in the usual way. The recurrent dreams and flashbacks result in anxiety and helplessness, ranging from apathy and withdrawal to panic. Such traumas frequently follow criminal assault, accidents, torture and catastrophic events, especially those outside the usual range of human experience.
