Tortoises are under threat from the destruction of habitat, especially of nesting sites and the taking of eggs, introduced predators and the wildlife trade.

The classification of the Testudo group is very confused. The old concept of 4 subspecies is inadequate and fundamentally flawed, with large regional variations occurring from region to region.
