Threatened species of Capra aegagrus cretica

Hunting and habitat disturbance have been a great threat to Capra aegagrus cretica.

One of the rarest representatives of Greek fauna is the Cretan wild goat or Agrimi Capra aegagrus cretica which is endemic to the island of Crete. The species is on the verge of extinction, resulting in a special legal status by the Crete public authorities. In the past, when habitat disturbance was not so intensive and long range hunting rifles not as common, the animal was living in natural populations in many regions of Crete. Today the only naturally occurring population of Agrimia is found in the vicinity of the Samaria Gorge and neighboring gorges of the Samaria National Park.

There is an estimated total of 600-700 individuals of Capra aegagrus cretica.

The IUCN consider Capra aegagrus cretica as "Vulnerable".
