Theism

Belief in the existence of gods or a god may constitute a barrier to social and economic progress. The belief in a particular god or gods may foster intolerance, rivalry, repression, discrimination or segregation.

Theism exists in most societies but its effect is most noticeable in countries or societies where there is an established or official religion.
