Social pressure for marriage

In modern Japan men, ideally, should marry in their late 20s. Many single men are not considered appropriate for promotion or overseas work, since unattached males are regarded as less stable and reliable. To be called a marriage refugees one of the more subtle social ways in Japan of encouraging marriage, similar to the anglo-term "old maid" applied to women.
