Scarce options for involvement in cultural activities

  • Minimal cultural life

Claim

Despite the vital importance of participation by all members of society in the socio-economic structures of communities, life in many Third World villages offers limited opportunities for cultural involvement. When land was originally homesteaded, there was little time or opportunity for a rich cultural life since every day was filled with the work on the land. As more people came, few cultural centers were created; instead, the isolated homestead became the basis for cultural development. Even today in most villages there is minimal cultural organization, and few hours of daylight are available for meetings and activities. The unchanging roles and forms of cultural life give rise to a feeling of estrangement.
