Prohibitive cost of nuclear power plants
Incidence
There was an 800% cost overrun on the Seabrook nuclear project in New Hampshire, originally budgeted at less than US$ 1 billion but estimated, in 1984, to require $9 billion to complete.
Claim
Bold assertions and unsupported analysis have led to enormous uncertainty about the actual cost or economic merits of nuclear power. Cost estimates for nuclear plants in the USA have been rising since the first commercial plants were started in the early 1960s, but most of the early evidence of economic troubles was ignored by experts who assumed that costs would begin to decline as the technology improved.
