Meaningless recreation

  • Escapist leisure

Claim

Closely related to, and indeed part of the consumption process, is the way modern man uses his leisure time. Instead of being closely integrated with work as in the past, the pursuit of leisure has become a desperate escape from work experienced as increasingly meaningless. But leisure itself has become a meaningless, packaged mass activity, with its values provided by the entertainment industry. Mass society weakens or destroys traditional human groupings, thus leaving the individual at the mercy of impersonal communication such as that provided by the media.
