Nature
Magic is the practice of occult arts and rites to influence the natural or supernatural world. It is usually taken to be black magic, or harmful and is generally held as unacceptable in developed society. In primitive society it is still an integral part of daily living and may conflict with attempts to integrate tribes into developing society. While most magic practised by tribes is beneficial it is usually incompatible with modernized living patterns.
Incidence
In developed society covens and small groups which practice black magic exist and appear to attract a fringe of dabblers and dilettantes who are often rich and well-educated. In primitive societies the practice of magic is widespread, although diminishing with the influence of 'advanced' culture.
Counter-claim
Science is simply a conceptually narrower form of magic. Both are attempts to control events, both have a strong faith in the order and uniformity of nature and both believe in invariable natural laws.
