Logjams in rivers

Nature

Logs floating downs river may derive from human logging activity or from natural causes, notably associated with flooding. Under certain conditions logs catch on obstacles in the watercourse and lock together with the accumulation of further logs. This can cause obstruction to navigation and can create risk of flooding if the logjam effectively dams the water.
